2007 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.
January 13: Pruning Demos & Rose Care Advice
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm
January 14: Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
Our Consulting Rosarians will present a Rose Care Seminar. Kitty Belendez and Bob Belendez will give their annual pruning seminar, and they will discuss planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend.
February 11: Meeting / Suzanne Horn on "Rose Exhibiting Made Easier"
Suzanne Horn, from Glendale, California is best known as an exhibitor, but is also a Consulting Rosarian and Apprentice Judge. She presently grows approximately 475 exhibition roses of all types, all in containers. Suzanne's new program will share as much of her insight and love of exhibiting as she can cram into an hour-long PowerPoint presentation punctuated with hundreds of beautiful photos.
March 11: Meeting / Scott Klittich of Otto & Sons Nursery
Scott is the owner of Otto & Sons Nursery in Fillmore, CA. There they grow thousands of roses of all types on 22 acres. He will discuss how they grow their roses, pest control, and show us some new and interesting rose varieties. Scott received his degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
April 1: Meeting / Kitty Belendez on "Fabulous Floribundas"
Master Consulting Rosarian Kitty Belendez, will give a PowerPoint presentation on one of her favorite types of roses: the "Fabulous Floribundas." Kitty and Bob grow about 350 roses of all types, of which her floribunda collection numbers around 50.
(Meeting moved to the first Sunday because Easter is on the second Sunday of the month.)

Saturday, April 28-29: Rose Days at Otto & Sons Nursery

Otto & Sons celebrates their 15th Annual "Rose Days" with terrific discounts on all of their potted roses. Located in Fillmore, CA, where 110,000 roses comprising 800 different varieties are happily in bloom in their cool coastal weather. On April 28th only, Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society members will be there in full force at a special table to talk roses and enjoy the day.
April 29: Rose Garden Tours at Members' Homes
At the home of members in Canyon Country and in Newhall.
May 6: Rose Auction & Mexican Fiesta
2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. -- at the home of Karen T.S. Gubert
This year's Auction features more than 120 awesome rosebushes of all types. The event is being held in the beautiful rose garden of Karen and George Gubert in Saugus. After the auction we will have a Mexican Fiesta (potluck) with all sorts of delicious salads, desserts, and side dishes. Be sure to get your very own bidding card when you arrive. We'll see you there. All attendees are requested to bring a dish of food, and must RSVP to Kym Ponegalek.

Saturday, May 19: "A Day of Wine & Roses" CR Seminar & Bus Tour
A special Consulting Rosarian Seminar combined with a Bus Tour to Rose Story Farm in Carpinteria where 18,000 roses are on display. A gourmet lunch will be served in the garden. The second destination is the Stagecoach Inn in Newbury Park. Tickets are $60 for members, $65 non-members. Includes one raffle ticket; additional raffle tickets may be purchased for $1 each on the day of the event. Raffle prizes will include such items as 20 bottles of wine, 12 Nor'East miniature roses in one-gallon pots, Corona Clippers, Ralph Moore autographed book, and rose fertilizer from Mills Magic and Dr. Earth. Limited to the first 50 people who sign up.
June 10: Meeting / Bill DeVor of Nor'East Miniature Roses
Bill will tell us all about miniature roses, describe the many different varieties, and how they propagate and grow them for mass production in their greenhouses. Nor'East Miniature Roses are grown at Greenheart Farms in Arroyo Grande, California (near Paso Robles. Their main 35,000 square foot rose propagation house has automated controls for light level, light duration, humidity, watering, nutrients, and temperature.
July 8: Rose Show Planning Meeting, 2:30 p.m.
The meeting will be held at the home of Show Chair Karen T.S. Gubert, Saugus, CA.
September 9: Meeting / Jack Shoultz on "Organic Rose Growing"
Join us for an inspired afternoon with Jack Shoultz, Consulting Rosarian from San Diego, who will present an insightful and practical approach to organic rose gardening. Jack and his wife Bonnie grow 500 roses organically in their garden. Jack will weave together the fundamentals of why organic gardening is essential to growing fabulous rose plants, with clever tips on how you can make your rose growing hobby earth- and people-friendly and responsible. Jack will demonstrate that "what lies below the surface" is where our attention should be to cultivate the optimal environment for beautiful blooms.
October 13: Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society
14th Anniversary "Wild West" Rose Show at William S. Hart Park, Newhall
The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 14th Annual Rose Show on Saturday, October 13, 2007. All rose growers are welcome to exhibit at our show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the society to exhibit and there are no entry fees; just bring your roses as the society will furnish the vases. There will be 68 prizes (crystal giftware) and more than 500 ribbons awarded. Five large Waterford crystal trophies are given to the top roses. Two novices will be eligible to win a crystal prize as well as a $25 gift certificate from Green Thumb Nursery. Entries are received from 7:00 am to 9:45 am on Saturday morning. Judging will be from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. The show will open to the public at 12:30 pm. Trophy winners will be presented their awards at 2:00 pm. While there, visit the William S. Hart Cowboy Museum, the Heritage Junction old train museum, turn-of-the-century-homesteads, and the Antique Rose Garden.
October 14: Meeting / Gisele Schoniger on "Soil Secrets for Growing Fabulous Roses"
Gisele represents the Dr. Earth company and will discuss the many products they have available for roses, such as potting soils, fertilizers, and soil amendments. She will discuss trends in the industry, how to build the microbial life of your soil, what is mycorrhizal fungi and why is that so important to your rose garden. In her 27 years in the Garden Industry, Gisele has accumulated a wide range of experience and knowledge. She earned her degree in Ornamental Horticulture from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. She is a featured speaker with Sharon Asakawa and John Bagnasco with the Garden Compass Radio Show as well as several other stations in the Northwest, and she just finished her first commercial on Gardner & Bloome to be aired on HGTV. Her workshops are upbeat, educational and entertaining. Each and every person that attends will receive a wealth of educational materials, some sample packets of products, and Kellogg's will also donate lots of goodies for our raffle.
November 11: Meeting / Tom Carruth of Weeks Roses / New Rose Introductions
Tom Carruth is the Director of Research at Weeks Roses. Some of his well-known roses include Marilyn Monroe, Moonstone, Betty Boop, Outta the Blue, and the 2007 American Rose Society Members' Choice award winner, Hot Cocoa. Tom will give us a sneak preview of the new rose introductions for 2008 and beyond. Each year at the Weeks research greenhouses in California, they hand pollinate about 50,000 flowers to produce around 250,000 seeds. After a thorough 8 to 10 year evaluation period, culminating in the All-America Rose selections (AARS) trials, only about 3 or 4 varieties emerge from the group as truly superior and market-worthy.
December 9: Annual Holiday Party & Installation of Officers
At the home of Steve & Suzy Jones, Valencia. Great food, lots of fun, and some door prizes, too. Complete details will be in the November issue of Rose Ecstasy.
