2013 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center (map), 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.
January 6, 2013: Executive Board Meeting
1:30 P.M. -- at the home of Valerie Keeler & Scott Siefert
Annual planning, budgeting, and audit committee appointment. We will discuss and approve our annual calendar, rose show, garden tours, rose auction, and other important matters.
January 12: One-on-One Rose Care Consulting
at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm. SCVRS members who have paid their 2012 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card good at Green Thumb Nursery (Newhall) for the entire year, including purchases made this day.
January 13: Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
Located at the SCV Senior Center, Newhall
2:30 p.m.
Our Consulting Rosarians Steve Jones, Bob Belendez, and Kitty Belendez will present a Rose Care Seminar including pruning existing rose bushes and planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend. Free of charge.
ANNUAL GREEN THUMB DISCOUNT CARD
SCVRS members who have paid their 2013 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card at the meeting, good at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall store only. If you cannot attend this meeting, you will need to mail a SASE to Kitty Belendez to get your Green Thumb Discount Card, which will be mailed on January 14th.
February 10: Meeting
Speakers: Jeri & Clay Jennings on "Rose Rustling for Preservation"
Jeri and Clay Jennings, of Camarillo, CA will discuss the collection, propagation, preservation, and distribution of forgotten and rare roses.
March 10: Meeting
Speaker: Walt & Diana Kilmer on "From Pruning to Blooming"
Walt and Diana are Consulting Rosarians that live in Temecula, CA. Diana is President of California Coastal Rose Society (San Diego County), and Walt is Vice President of Programs.

April 7, 2013, Sunday: ROSE AUCTION
"California Gold Rush"
Auctioneer: Bob Martin
Located at Castaic School District
28131 Livingston Avenue, Valencia, CA 91355
Set-up: 10:30 a.m.
Lunch: 12:15 p.m.
Auction: 1:00 p.m.
Clean-up: 4:00 p.m.
This year the auction is being held at the Castaic Union School District, 28131 Livingston Avenue, Valencia, CA 91355.
Potluck lunch begins at 12:15 p.m. And the live auction begins promptly at 1:00 p.m.
This auction will NOT be open to the public, but any person that is a member of any rose society may attend. All attendees must bring food to share in the potluck luncheon. All attendees MUST RSVP so that we can make sufficient arrangements for tables and chairs and other supplies and soft drinks.
We do not accept credit cards, and cannot do shipping or deliveries.
All payments must be made by either cash or check on the day of the event, and all plants must be removed from the facility by each winning bidder at the close of the event.
Proxy bidding is allowed, but the bidder must make their own proxy arrangements as we do not have staff available to handle that.
No smoking or alcohol is allow at this facility.
April 28: SCVRS Rose Garden Tour
This year's garden tour be held at the home of Master Rosarians Bob & Kitty Belendez in Saugus. 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Here is the detailed flyer.

APRIL is Red Rose Month, which includes roses that are medium red, dark red, and red blend.
June 9: Meeting
Speaker: Suzanne Horn on
"David Austin Roses for the American Garden"
Suzanne Horn will speak on the many forms and fragrances of David Austin Roses and their use in the garden. Program highlights include photos of newest varieties and classic favorites. Suzanne grows over 400 roses in her Glendale, CA garden and they are all in containers.
JUNE is Pink Rose Month, which includes roses that are light pink, medium pink, deep pink, and pink blend.

We will feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a potted rose plant.

July 14: 1:30 p.m. Board Meeting & Rose Show Planning Meeting
At the home of Bob & Kitty Belendez. Rose show Director Kitty will host this meeting to finalize all the nitty gritty details for our annual rose show. We'll finalize the rose show schedule, review the trophies, and judges luncheon.

September 8: Meeting
Speaker: Scott Klittich of Otto & Sons Roses
"How to Recognize Bugs & Diseases on Your Roses"
Scott will show us how to recognize bugs and diseases on our roses. He has worked at the family nursery, Otto & Sons in Fillmore, for over 28 years and is currently general manager.There they grow thousands of roses on 22 acres. Scott received his Bachelor's Degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
SEPTEMBER is Yellow Rose Month, which includes roses that are light yellow, medium yellow, dark yellow, and yellow blend.
October 13: Meeting
Speaker: Randy Ritchie of Malibu Compost
Since we do not yet have advance detailed information about our speaker's topic, we are left to wonder if we might be taught how to make compost from seashells, seaweed, and seagull poop while wearing a yellow polka-dot bikini at the Malibu seashore. Sounds like fun!
We will also feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

20th Anniversary "Wild West" Rose Show

Kitty Belendez, Rose Show Director
The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 20th Annual Rose Show themed "Wild West Roses" on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the William S. Hart Park, 24151 Newhall Avenue, Newhall, CA 91321. The show was located in Hart Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Everyone is welcome to exhibit their home-grown roses at the show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the rose society to exhibit, and there are no entry fees. Simply bring your roses in a bucket of water, and the rose society will furnish the vases and the entry tags.
November 10: Meeting
Speaker: Kim Rupert on "Rose Propagation by the Burrito Method"
Kim Rupert has been growing roses for many years, and is especially knowledgeable about unusual roses. For Kim's talk today he will show us his successful method of propagating roses by the "Burrito Method." Come learn and have fun too.
We will also feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.
It is White Rose Month, which includes roses that are white, near white, and white blend.
